The Inn of the Powerful Torque

————————–

Leaving the adventurer’s guild, I finally took a breather.
I feel like I overdid it, and I’m a little anxious about what’s to come, but I have no choice but to go with the flow.

“Yuta, are you heading to the inn now?”

“Yeah, I want to take a break, and I need to call Bell and the others too.”

Though there’s no one around, I talk to Sylphy in a hushed voice.
It’s a hassle, but I don’t want to be seen as someone who talks to himself.

I head to the inn, guided by a map that Eltina-san gave me.
She said it’s a mid-level inn, a bit expensive but they put a lot of effort into their food, so it should be delicious.
I’m looking forward to it.

“Yuta, there’s someone following us at a celtain distance from the adventurer’s guild.
What should we do?”

…Are they tailing us? They should know where I’m going since I received an explanation at the guild.
What’s their purpose?

“What kind of person is it?”

“They’re dressed as an adventurer, but they’re obviously aware of us, even though they’re just wandering around the shops.”

If Sylphy is aware of tailing, she must be the ultimate ninja.
The problem is whether the tail is sent by the adventurer’s guild to monitor me, if Carl or someone else is trying to take revenge, or if there is a possibility of a third party that I’m unaware of.
No, there’s no third party.
I’m not making sense even as I say it.

“Sylphy, can you keep an eye on that tail? If possible, can you find out their purpose?”

“Okay, I’ll keep an eye on them and report back if I find anything.”

“Thanks, I appreciate it.”

Spirits are the strongest ninjas.
Only people with a high affinity for spirits can counteract them.
Even though there are spirits everywhere in town, countermeasures seem difficult.

If I could talk to spirits, it wouldn’t be impossible to establish a secret information agency that holds secrets from all over the world.
…It sounds cool, but it’s probably more trouble than it’s worth.
Let’s just live our lives happily.
I can’t sense the tail’s presence, so I’ll trust Sylphy and wait.

“Gowan Torque’s Inn”…This is it.
The “Gowan” part of the name makes me a little uneasy, but the food is supposed to be delicious, and the appearance is not bad either.
I open the door and enter.

“Welcome! Are you alone?”

As I enter, a plump middle-aged woman energetically greets me.

“Yes, Eltina-san introduced me.
Do you have a room available?”

“Oh, Eltina introduced you? That means you’re an adventurer, right?”

“Yes.
Well, I’m a fresh newbie who just registered today.”

“Is that so… Adventuring is a tough job.
You don’t look like you’ve trained much.
Are you okay?”

She’s quite pushy.
I feel like I can’t go against her in some way.
I thought I had tightened up quite a bit from doing construction work and undead hunting, but it seems I still have a long way to go.

“Well, I’ll manage somehow.
Thank you for your concern.”

“Okay.
Just don’t push yourself too hard.
Oh, right, you’re staying overnight, right? How many nights? We offer breakfast and dinner, and it’s 12,000 elt per night.
Since Eltina introduced you, it’s 10,000 elt per night.
Oh, my name is Martha.
Nice to meet you.”

She doesn’t seem like a bad person, but it’s hard to keep up with the pace of the conversation.
However, Eltina-san seemed reluctant to introduce me, so is it okay to ask for a discount? …Well, let’s take advantage of her kindness.

“My name is Yuta.
Nice to meet you, Martha-san.
Can I stay for about seven nights, please?”

“Seven nights, huh? Okay, I got it.
But you’re very polite for an adventurer.
What did you do before this? Oh, I’m sorry, it’s taboo to pry into an adventurer’s past.
I apologize.”

She’s a lively person.
She talks and agrees with herself.

If I stay for seven nights, I should be able to settle down in the labyrinth city.
I need to buy various things to improve my living environment in the land of death.

“It’s okay.
And the price for seven nights is 70,000 elt, right?”

“Yeah, that’s right.
We’re proud of our cooking.
Enjoy your stay.
Hey, Karluk, we have a customer.
Show them to their room.”

“Oh, yes.
I’m looking forward to it.”

Martha calls out to Karluk, and a boy runs up.

“Hey, this way, big brother.”

It seems like he will guide me.
This inn seems casual and easygoing, which is a relief.

“This is your room, big brother.
Here’s the key, don’t lose it,” he says, then runs off without listening to any questions.
Is it because he inherited Martha-san’s bloodline or something? I enter the room after opening the door.

It’s about six tatami mats in size, with one bed and a small desk.
There aren’t many belongings, but it smells of civilization.
Oh no, tears are welling up.

For some reason, I feel tense as I touch the bed.
Wow, it’s slightly firm, but it’s a proper bed.
I thought straw beds were good enough.
I underestimated this otherworld.
I’m sorry.

“Sylphy, are most of the beds in this world like this one, proper and comfortable?”

“Huh? I haven’t used many types of bedding, so I don’t know for sure, but this one is similar to most beds I’ve seen.
Of course, there are high-end and low-end ones too.”

“A high-end bed, huh? I wonder what it’s like?”

Perhaps the level of civilization here is higher than I thought.
I don’t know what material this bed is made of.

“If you’re interested, I can take you to a shop that sells bedding.
But the expensive ones are pricey because they use high-quality materials.”

“Hmm, I see.
We need beds at the our household and other necessary items.
We’ll make getting a high-end bed a goal once we’ve earned enough money and then buy the essential items for our daily life.”

Even this inn’s bed is comfortable enough to sleep in.
We also need a sofa, a table, dishes, cooking utensils, clothing, armor, accessories, food, seasoning, and more.
We need to work hard to earn enough money.
In a way, the dispute in the adventurer’s guild may have been lucky, as it gave me a way to make money.

“Speaking of which, what happened to the person who was tailing us?”

“He watched you enter this inn, and now he´s back at the adventurer’s guild.
I´ll let me know if anything happens,” she said.

I wonder if they just wanted to make sure I really stayed at this inn? They left immediately, so I guess I don’t have to worry too much about it.

“Thank you.
I appreciate it,” I replied, thanking her.
I lay down on the bed and let out a sigh.
It feels nice to sink into the softness of the bed.
It’s also great that sand doesn’t stick to my face when I turn over.
I want to keep sleeping like this, but Bell and the others are waiting for me, so I should summon them soon.

“Alright, I’m going to summon Bell and the others.
Let’s all go for a walk then,” I said to Sylphy.

“Yes, I think they’ll be happy,” she replied with a smile.

First, I’ll summon Bell.
I imagine her in my mind and summon her.
In an instant, she appears before me with a “pon.”

“Yuu-taa, Bell´s here,” she exclaims as she jumps into my arms.
I give her a hug and play with her cheeks, enjoying the squishy sensation.

“Wait here for a moment, Bell.
I’m going to summon Rain, Turu, and Tamamo now,” I tell her.

“Okay,” she replies obediently.
I summon Rain while still holding Bell.
She rubs her head against mine and purrs.
I pet her to calm her down before summoning Turu and Tamamo.

“We made it safely to the dungeon city.
Did you all behave yourselves?” I asked them.

“We were good!” “Kyuuu~” “Yes.” “Kuu~” they all reply energetically.

As I listen to their lively responses, I spoil them with lots of affection.
It’s only been half a day since we were separated, but I’ve already missed them quite a bit.
Am I becoming too dependent on them?

“Alright, let’s go for a walk around the dungeon city, everyone,” I said.

“We’re going for a walk!” “Kyuu~” “We’ll go for a walk.” “Kuku~”

“Just remember that I can’t answer back once we’re outside.
Also, if there’s anything you want, let me know, but we can’t afford anything too expensive,” I added.

“Okay,” they replied cheerfully, but it seemed like they didn’t understand very well.

“If you find something you want, let me know.
And if you come across anything that might make a good souvenir for Dyne and the others, please tell me,” I continued.

“Hmm, well, in our case, as long as we have alcohol, we’ll be fine.
Can you buy alcohol if there’s a liquor store around?” Sylphy responded.

Did Sylphy only want that? Saying that we should just give them alcohol… Well, it’s easy, so that works.
It’s a bit sad though.

“Got it.
We’ll definitely get some alcohol while we’re here,” I said, causing Sylphy’s cool and beautiful expression to break into a smile.
It’s really that easy when you just say it yourself.

“Alright, shall we go then? Let’s just wander around and go into any shops that catch our eye to buy things we like,” I suggested.

Although Martha would likely give us a ton of information if we asked her, we’re in a labyrinth city after all.
Walking around without any prior knowledge seems like it would be fun.

I left the key with Martha at the counter and we exited the inn.
We had plenty of time for a stroll, as dinner wouldn’t be served for another two hours.

While keeping my eyes peeled for cute animal ears and tails, we wandered through the labyrinth city.
It was enjoyable just to look around.

“Yuta, someone followed us and reported to the guild master of the adventurer’s guild.
It seems like their objective was to confirm your location,” Sylphy said.

“Understood.
Thank you,” I whispered in response.
I had completely forgotten that we were being followed while I was so enchanted by this world’s city.
Well, it doesn’t seem like a problem, so it’s fine.

As we aimlessly wandered around, we stumbled upon a street lined with food stalls.
Oh, the smell of grilled meat is irresistible.
All the pent-up desire for meat is suddenly released.

“Yuta, I want to eat this!” “Kyu!” “Meat!” “Ku!”

Bell and the others were already eagerly waiting in front of a yakitori stand.
They’re quick.
I nodded at them and called out to the stand owner.

“Hey, what kind of meat is this and how much is it per skewer?” I asked, as my eyes were fixed on the meat.
It looks like chicken.
The fat from the meat drips and sizzles on the fire, giving off smoke.
Yakitori… it’s irresistible.
The only downside is that they’re using normal wood to grill it.
I would have preferred charcoal.

“Welcome! Is this your first time in the labyrinth city, bro? This meat is from the Rough Bird, a bird that can be hunted on the sixth floor of the labyrinth.
It’s cheap and delicious, and it’s a famous dish of the labyrinth city.
One skewer is 100 Elt,” the stall owner replied.

So it’s definitely chicken.
Should I go for it and have some yakitori and premium beer to celebrate our arrival in the labyrinth city?

“Oh, it’s a famous dish? Then I’ll try 20 skewers,” I said.

I paid 2000 Elt and chatted with the stall owner.
Bell and the others were free-spirited, peeking into the grill and sitting on the stall owner’s shoulder.
My heart was pounding.

Wait, Bell, Rain.
You’re drooling.
Tamamo, your tail looks like it’s on fire.
Are you okay? Turu is waiting patiently, but their gaze is fixed on the meat.

Finally, the yakitori is ready, and I put it in my magic bag.
Bell and the others were disappointed that they couldn’t eat it right away, but we can’t just make floating yakitori in a crowded area.
We chose various foods that caught our eye and purchased them, storing them in the magic bag.
Bell and the others pulled me back to the inn, eager to eat the meat.
Well, I feel the sameway, so I can’t complain.
I want to eat meat soon.
