Chapter 2: Signs of Fantasy

Am I in the wrong spot?

No… theres no way. Ive been walking to this house for the past 2 years. Ive memorized almost every step and turn you must take to arrive here.

More so when Im clearly focused on arriving home, there shouldn be a mistake now should there be? I saw every single landmark, from the gas station to the Chinese restaurant two streets back…

But the more I look at my ”house ”, no… Its not just the house that was out of the ordinary from normal, the entire street was something you can even deem as reasonable and realistic.

The simple and humble house of the old couple across the street was replaced with a Japanese ramen store. The apartment filled with students next door became a clothing shop filled with traditional southeast Asian clothing. Theres a famous fast food restaurant from the States just sitting next to the convenience store. You can even see a large crane on a construction site next alley.

This is more of a cultural appreciation street rather than a residence. But whats odd, was this looked like a whole wreck and not a proper block. Its more of a haunted site, due to the state of the buildings surrounding me, and not the actual street I was used to.

Did I develop Alzheimers? Was I finally going crazy?

I looked around for a little longer, but due to the shouting from earlier, It was not like I have any choice but to hide in my house… or where it shouldve been. I decided to enter the convenience store standing on top of where my house should be.

It looks like its been left out for more than a year or two…

Even though the shelves seems to be empty, I could still see some products laying about on the floor. I couldn smell any rotten food though, so it wasn that bad inside. Why would they just leave products lying around when they abandoned this place?

I went inside looking for answers but questions only continued to enter my head.

Im quite sketched out about the whole entering an unmaintained building, but Im too confused right now and I need immediate answers.

If you think about it, isn this what you would imagine an apocalyptic street would look like? The food on the shelves is all out yet the floor is littered with plastic and cans. Its like someone just ate them there and leave them be. You can hear the engines and horns of the cars from the inside like you were left alone in this world.

More so you can smell anything rotten, just a musky and dusty environment. How long have they been left here?

Thankfully, there were still those gangsters from across the street. It gives me comfort knowing theres someone else here…

Rattle…

As I walk towards the counter of the store, the rattling of cans echoed from the back.

I couldn help but jump due to the sheer silence I was exposed to before the loud rattle.

Are you serious…

I can help but channel my entire attention on the opened door connecting the store to the backroom.

Whatever it might be, Id rather be cautious than encounter a venomous snake, or a crazed serial killer rushing after me. The environment and the confusing situation didn help its case at all.

Ive scared myself enough by imagining too many things from all these weird occurrences and Id rather have them stay as mere imagination.

Slowly and silently, I changed my direction toward the exit as slowly as possible. I can bear to make any noise.

Skrr.

A sound so obscure yet creepy suddenly echoed throughout the abandoned store throwing away all the courage I tried to muster.

I flicked my attention toward the growling noise as I prepared to full on run out of the store, with no regard for everything. All I had in mind was I have to escape this sketchy store and whatever was using it in the back room.

Skrr.

It growls again as the rattling of the metal on the floor continues to follow after.

Luckily whatever it might be, a **ing tiger or a goddamn ghost, it still hasn noticed me.

Skrr…

I continue to walk slowly towards the exit, trying to ignore whatever the creature behind the store might be.

Soon after what seemed to be a few hours, I managed to grasp the knob of the door.

Not wanting to spend another second inside this magical store that somehow appeared at my house, I opened the sliding door without any intention to spend another second inside.

CREAKKKK

The door creaks loudly.

Skrr…

” Oh, you
e **ing kidding. ” It didn creak the first time I opened it.

Skrr!?

The growling grew louder as the rattles become more aggressive.

I was incredibly curious about who or what was capable of making that sound. But I wasn curious how death would feel like.

I bust open the door with all my strength, allowing me to escape the store easily.

I rushed out without hesitating, even if I fall over. I just want to be out of there as far as possible. Thankfully, that didn happen as I managed to land on my feet, allowing me to run as fast as possible.

Skrr!!

A loud deafening screech escapes from the store, making me flinch from the sheer volume of the noise. I continued running but as I was already outside, It felt a lot safer to take a look, so I shifted my head as I continue to run.

Ke..Ke..

” What the f- ” As much as I had wanted to be realistic in these weird moments, I could only feel astonished and complicated as I see a bipedal lizard rush outside of the glass door, shattering it in the process.

As its entire figure gets fully exposed by the setting sun.

Theres no way

Skrr!! It screeches yet again, putting out his chest during the screech.

Without thinking any further, I started running as fast as possible to speeds I didn even think I could reach. That thing is as tall as I was, and it has the body of a lizard. There was no way, I could do anything other than run.

And besides, it seems like it wasn going to give me one.

Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud!

I was focusing on where I was running, but the deafening footsteps behind me seems to only grow closer, despite my already insanely fast speed.

KRRRR..

I could hear its tongue rattling as it chases after me.

Isn this thing bipedal? How could it be so fast?! Complaints fill my head as I try to think of a solution amidst the rising problem.

Crack!

A loud deafening rumble escapes from the ground behind me. It was like as if a boulder hit the road.

Regardless, it wasn something I could ignore so I looked behind me, still full-on running, and I seemed to have found out the origin of the sound. The lizard was nowhere to be seen, but there was a huge debris of graphite scattered around a spot on the floor. Like a boulder just hit it… But there was no boulder?

Wait…

A chilling thought entered my mind. Something I wouldn even dare to think of, but it was also the only reasonable explanation I could think of. If this whole scenario was reasonable in the first place…

Skrr!!

As much as I had hoped that my hypothesis was wrong. I looked upwards in the direction of the screech, only to find a lizard rising up at high speeds.

It could jump that high?!
